CABINET REFACING

Cabinet Refacing in Saugus, CA

A 3 minute read

Short answer

Refacing keeps your cabinet boxes and covers what shows: a thin skin glued over the face frames and the exposed sides, with new doors, drawer fronts and hardware. It suits boxes that are dry, square and tight at the joints, with frames that are stained or patchy. If the sink base is soft or a frame has opened, no skin fixes that, and the boxes should go.

Refacing sits between two cheaper routes and one dearer one. Paint and new doors also keep the boxes; new boxes replace them. Which one fits depends less on taste than on what your boxes are made of and how they have aged, and you can find that out yourself before anyone measures.

Check the boxes before you price a skin

A skin is only as good as what it is glued to. Three of the five checks on keep or replace your cabinets decide refacing on their own, and they need a flashlight and one emptied cabinet.

The floor of the sink base
Solid when you lean on it, with no dark stain spreading from a corner. Swollen particle board does not recover, and a skin will not hide it for long.
The face frame joints
A tight line you can feel but barely see. A skin glued across a joint that is opening cracks along that joint.
A raw cut edge
Plywood shows thin stripes and takes new hinges reliably. Particle board can stay if it is dry and square, but it holds a screw well once and poorly the second time.

Keeping the boxes is the scope that pays back

The one kitchen scope in the Remodeling 2025 Cost vs Value Report that returns more than it costs is the one that leaves the cabinet boxes in place and replaces the fronts. The figures price one fixed 200 square foot kitchen across the Los Angeles metro. They are a benchmark, not a quote for your kitchen.

Worth knowing. Santa Clarita's amended code exempts house cabinets not over eight feet from a building permit, and in the same section requires plumbing, electrical and mechanical permits for that work unless separately exempted. Read the city's list of exempt work. Refacing that leaves the sink and the outlets where they are stays simple.
What does refacing cover that new doors do not?
The face frame and the exposed sides. New doors alone leave the old frame showing, painted. Refacing glues a thin skin over the frame and the sides, so a frame that is stained or patchy disappears under it. Both keep the boxes.
Can a skin go over a frame that is loose?
No. A skin glued over a moving joint cracks along it. Check the face frame first, and if it is opening, the honest answer is new boxes.
Does cabinet refacing need a permit in Saugus?
Not a building permit while the cabinets stay where they are and are not over eight feet tall, under the exemption for house cabinets. If the sink, an outlet or a duct moves with the job, the trade permits apply. Permits and inspections has the detail.

Ask whether your boxes can take a skin

Tell the contractor what the sink base felt like and what the cut edge showed. That is enough to say whether refacing, new doors or new boxes fits, before anyone measures. Call (661) 430-7779 or write.
