PLANNING GUIDES

Three guides to read before you remodel your kitchen in Saugus, CA

Short answer

Comparing bids? Start with what a kitchen is made of. Getting ready for the contractor's visit? Read what the contractor asks on the first visit. Worried about surprises once the walls open? Read what goes wrong and who pays.

Each guide takes five to seven minutes to read and links out to the pages on cabinets, walls and permits.

The three guides

What a kitchen is made of
Read this if you are comparing bids. It names every part and what it does, from the cabinet boxes, doors, hinges and slides to the counter, its edge, and the plumbing and wiring in the wall behind it. Two prices only mean something once you know what each one leaves out. It pairs with keeping or replacing the boxes you already have.
What the contractor asks on the first visit
Read this if the visit is coming up. It lists each question and what your answer changes. Some answers move the price, and one or two decide whether the layout you want is possible at all. Reading it first makes the visit shorter and the number more precise.
What goes wrong and who pays
Read this if you are worried about surprises. Rot under the sink, a subfloor that slopes, wiring an inspector will not pass. It explains how a change order works, who carries which cost, and why the contingency is a real line item and not padding. It sits next to permits and inspections.
Do I need to read these before I call?
No. Call and ask, and the contractor covers the same ground on the visit. The guides are for people who like to read first and arrive with a list.
Where are the quick answers?
On the answers page, with the other questions homeowners ask most often.

Read one, then ask about your own kitchen

None of this replaces someone standing in your kitchen with a tape measure and a flashlight, checking what the wall behind the sink is carrying. It does make that visit shorter.
